Sumner Hill Historic Renovation & Reproduction

Jamaica Plain, MA

Project Details

Kit and Lisa knew they found their dream home in the historic Sumner Hill section of Jamaica Plain the minute they laid eyes on it. Achieving their ideal interior, however, would require a renovation, as well as reproducing some of the period features of the 19th century home.

While the exterior had fallen into disrepair and the rusting metal fire-escape still adorned the rear elevation from the days when it was used as a boarding house, the interior millwork was largely untouched and simply magnificent. The project was designed by Frank Shirley Architects to increase the usable space in their originally tiny kitchen, while at the same time disturbing as little of the original detail as possible. Many details, including railings, crown moulding, and floor inlays, were replicated to faithfully match the existing designs. We are hard pressed even today to say where the old starts and the new begins.

Details included gorgeous, FSA designed custom cabinetry, historic reproduction windows from Boston Sash and Millwork, and a beautiful basement level exercise room and home theatre which are heated and cooled with modern air-to-air heat pumps (commonly known as mini-splits). The space is as comfortable year round as it is beautiful.

Let’s work together.
