The 18th century, First Church Meetinghouse in Dedham, MA required a
full restoration of the steeple, including extensive repairs to the
wooden trim, new sheet copper roofing at every level and repainting.
Landmark Services carried out a complete exterior restoration of this
important 18th century meetinghouse. The project was partially funded
by a grant from the Massachusetts Historic Commission's Preservation
Projects Fund.
Much of the steeple's decorative woodworking was
taken off and restored by our carpentry crew. The decorative urns were
in an extremely poor state. We removed deteriorated wood, applied
consolidating epoxies, and milled new wooden bases. These urns were
re-installed after the steeple roofing was complete. All three levels
of the steeple were stripped of asphalt roofing and re-roofed with lead
coated copper sheets. The slate roofing was repaired after the steeple
scaffolding and the main body of the church was scraped and painted.

Recently we carried out a major structural retrofit to the 1839
Rehoboth Congregational Church. This project involved the complete
re-framing of the roof and the installation of steel trusses to better
support the steeple. The coved ceiling was removed in order to carry
this work out. When the structural work was done we re-created a coved
ceiling to that the interior- and exterior- appearance remains
unchanged.
The first picture shows some of the new steel work and several of the new wooden trusses installed in the church roof. The new curved plaster ceiling is below that.
