Merry Christmas!

One of the reasons that I take so much satisaction in restoring historic homes for a living is that the home is the traditional focal point of family gatherings. It is an honor to make these places more welcoming and more beautiful so that family traditions can live on for new generations. Happy holidays everyone!

I am considering a dilapidated Greek Revival. I would want to remove all the additions to return it to its original footprint, even though this would make the house much smaller. How do you feel about this? Also would it be period to have the kitchen in the basement? Thank you, Charles

Tough to say. Sometimes it makes sense to return to the original footprint if the additions were poorly built or designed. Sometimes, though, the additions add to the character and history of the house even if they are not original.

Some houses of the period had kitchens in the basement but not all. Ar there any signs of cooking fireplaces down there?
